Cloth made of pure silk extracted from silkworm is prohibited by the Shariah for men and allowed for women.
However, artificial silk not taken from silkworm is permitted for men too.

Prohibition of Pure Silk Cloth for Men in Hadith:

عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى رضي الله عنه أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَحَلَّ لِإِنَاثِ أُمَّتِي الْحَرِيرَ وَالذَّهَبَ وَحَرَّمَهُ عَلَى ذُكُورِهَا. )سنن النسائي :8/ 575)

Abu Musa -May Allah be pleased with him¬- reported that the messenger of Allah said, “Almighty Allah allowed the silk and gold for females of my Ummah and forbade them for males thereof.”
Ali-May Allah be pleased with him- narrated that the messenger of Allah took the silk in his left hand and gold in his right hand and said raising them: “These are forbidden for the males of my Ummah and allowed for females thereof.”
Because of the prohibition in Hadith, wearing silk dress is forbidden for males. In the same way, any pure silk-cloth which is the part of a dress is forbidden for men. Cap is a part of dress, and therefore, cap made of pure silk is forbidden for men. Likewise, cloak is also worn as a part of a dress. Hence, it is prohibited for males if made of silk. If any male performs prayer in pure silk, the prayer will be Makrooh-e-Tahreemi. Therefore, everyman should be cautious about dress, or else he will be performing worship while wearing silk dress and his prayers will not be accepted.
The cloth whose warp (the threads that go along the length of cloth or a loom) is not silk and the weft (the threads that go across the length of a piece of cloth or a loom) is silk, such cloth is also considered silk dress which is forbidden for males.

Some Cases in Which Pure Silk is Allowed for Males:

    1. The usage of pure silk for purposes other than clothing is allowed for males too, on the condition that there is no pride and showing-off in it, for example, prayer-mat, carpet, pillow, bed sheet, string for rosary and keys, rope for scales, case for the Holy Quran, and wallet, etc. made of silk.
    2. The cloth whose wrap is of silk but the weft is of non-silk is allowed for males too.
    3. If silk is used in any dress in such a little quantity as measured by four fingers or less than that, such dress is also permitted for males, for example, silk embroidery, flower or strip on a hat or dress. But if the strips or flowers made of silk on any dress or cap are more than one, it will only be allowed for males if the space between them is more than the width of the strip or flower. If the space is equal to or less than the width of them and the cloth seems completely silky, it will not be allowed for males.

To Clothe Male Children With Silk Dress:

As pure silk is not allowed for males, in the same way, it is also not allowed to clothe the male children with pure silk dress. It is forbidden for males in Hadith without any specification with reference to age _ whether they be Young ones or older ones. These male children will not be sinful, but the person who clothes the children will be sinful. It is as if a person makes a child drunk. The sinner will be who made the child drunk, and not the child. So, parents should refrain from buying pure silk dress or dress- related things for their male children.

The Cause of Prohibition of Silk for Males is not Impurity:

Every insect which does not have blood is not Najis (impure). So, it can be used externally. Therefore, the cloth made of silkworm is not impure. That is why such cloth is not only lawful for females but their prayers are also acceptable in it. The reason for forbidding males from silk is not impurity, but it is prohibited for avoiding pride and showing off. As it has been prohibited in Hadith, so no one can say that he does not use it for pride and showing off, and hence, it should not be forbidden for him. Religion is all-obedience. If something has been prohibited by the Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم), we should avoid it without asking for reason.

Is Karandi Pure Silk or not?

A cloth named “Karandi”, which is used by males too, is suspected by some people to be pure silk. To what extent this suspicion holds ground, only the textile expert can inform about it correctly.
I, in spite of my endeavors, could not get any authentic information from experts. Anyhow, I have read a research about Karandi on a weblog (urduvb.com) in which Karandi is said to be pure silk. That statement is as under.

Translation: “It should be kept in mind that Karandi is silk. When silkworm produces silk, soft and delicate threads are drawn out of it; and when they get hard, some chemicals are poured on them and more threads are drawn which are called Karandi."
An audio file about this research is also available on the above-mentioned link in which a textile expert was asked in a telephonic conversation about Karandi and he declared it to be silk. If this research is correct and factual, this cloth will neither be allowed for adult men nor for male children. Furthermore, the males’ prayers will also be Makrooh in it. And if this research is not correct, this cloth will be allowed for males too.
In brief, only the textile experts and consumers can decide if the Karandi is silk or not.
